The Basket Dance is a traditional dance that celebrates the art of basket weaving, a significant cultural practice among the Navajo. This dance highlights the importance of craftsmanship and the role of baskets in daily life and ceremonies.

This dance celebrates the harvest. (See below for download.) I found the dance on youtube and adapted the steps for 3rd graders. In art class, students decorated the “baskets” (paper plates) with Native American symbols. Here are some authentic baskets we used as examples.

"These four baskets have the traditional Navajo basket design with the red, white, and black colors. The black design symbolizes the darkness (night) and clouds that bring the rain. The white part inside the black design represents the sacred mountains.
