The Guppy I submarines, Odax (SS-484) and Pomodon (SS-486), were completed in 1947. They had no schnorkel, and were painted in the standard haze grey with black horizontal surfaces. Experiments with Schnorkels soon showed that submarines could expect to spend most of their time submerged, even when running on diesels.
