As lead architects in a housing development in northwest Cambridge, we brought community and nature to the residents of Accordia, setting a whole new benchmark for large-scale housing in the UK. What began as a brownfield site, is now a vibrant and sustainable residential complex.

It also gives separate access to either a studio, or to a gate and stairs that lead directly up to the first floor terrace. The design improves the traditional relationship of 'house' and 'garden', with the main exterior space located on the first floor, right in the heart of the home.

The design includes a variety of innovative house and apartment types in the form of terraces, courtyard houses and ‘set-piece’ apartment buildings, composed within public landscaped gardens that extend to approximately three hectares.

Located in a decaying area by the city center, the Accordia development, which includes this project, is part of the national plan to densify the existing urban areas.

These serve large 3-bed duplex apartments on the top two storeys, the northernmost of which has a terrace that wraps its entire living room along two façades. Both townhouses and flats are large family-sized homes.

They even go beyond their historical counterparts by providing vital sustainability benefits, with all of the units achieving at least an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) band C, a key metric for energy efficiency.
