Alkahestry (錬丹術 Rentanjutsu?), also called Purification Arts (連弾主 Rendan-shu?), refers to the slightly different form of Alchemy used in the country of Xing. While fundamentally the same in terms of its application, Alkahestry differs from Alchemy in both its practice and its goal.

In Renaissance alchemy, alkahest was the theorized "universal solvent ". [nb 1] It was supposed to be capable of dissolving any composite substance, including gold (then not considered an element), without altering or destroying its fundamental components. [1] .
