Old English is a West Germanic language, and developed out of North Sea Germanic dialects from the 5th century. It came to be spoken over most of the territory of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms which became the Kingdom of England.

At many times in Old English, it is important to be able to distinguish four different types of syllables. Short-stemmed monosyllables: end with short vowel and one consonant, e.g. scip, in, glæd. Long-stemmed monosyllables: end with either a long vowel and one consonant or a short vowel and two consonants, e.g. hand, cniht, fōt, tōþ.
