2019年7月24日 · Zoo Atlanta welcomes Msholo, an adult male African elephant from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, to the Zambezi Elephant Center at the all-new African Savanna, opening on August 8, 2019. Msholo (mi-SHOW-low), who at 30 years old weighs more than 11,000 pounds, arrived in Atlanta on July 24.

The largest elephant on record was an adult male African savanna elephant. He weighed about 24,000 pounds (10,886 kilograms) and was 13 feet (3.96 meters) tall at the shoulder! Most elephants don’t get that large, but African elephants do grow larger than Asian elephants.

2024年10月21日 · Osh (male), Oakland Zoo’s last African elephant, has settled in his new home at The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee (The Sanctuary), an accredited Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) facility. Accompanying him on his almost 46-hour-long road trip to Tennessee were his Oakland Zoo Animal Care Team members and a Zoo Veterinarian.

All four elephants at the Maryland Zoo are African elephants of the savanna type. In March 2007, the Zoo celebrated the first elephant birth in its 132-year history. “Samson,” a male calf, was born to “Felix,” one of 2 adult females in the Zoo’s herd.

Place at the Zoo: African Savanna/Zambezi Elephant Center. Msholo is the only male elephant living at Zoo Atlanta and is easily identifiable as the largest of the three elephants. He is very calm and seems to enjoy being around females Tara and Kelly.

Male African elephants can reach 14,000 pounds and 13 feet in height. Females are a bit smaller, reaching 10,000 pounds and 10 feet in height. The distinctive ears serve several functions, including their most obvious function – forming a large surface to intercept distant or faint sounds.

2021年6月3日 · The North Carolina Zoo currently has seven African elephants: males C’sar, Artie, and now Louie; and females Nekhanda, Rafiki, Tonga, and Batir. This multi-generational herd is managed with two separate habitats on the Watani Grassland, allowing the elephants to socially interact with each other much as they would in the wild.

Two juvenile male African elephants, Tsandzikle (meaning “beloved”) and Inhlonipho (meaning “courteous”) have taken up residence at the San Diego Zoo Elephant Odyssey habitat. The males, who arrived from the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park earlier this week, are adjusting well to their new surroundings.

Males are kicked out of the herd at puberty (12 years). Elephants communicate through grunts, purrs, bellows, whistles, and the well known trumpet. Elephants are good swimmers and use their trunks as snorkels. Their trunk is a modified upper lip and nose, consisting of 40,000 muscles (the human body contains around 650).

Titan, a 16-year-old adult male African elephant, arrived in Atlanta on 29 January 2025, from Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita, Kans.
